Poseidon Movie

Took the family to see Poseidon yesterday. I liked the movie a lot. It keeps you at the edge of your seat the whole time (especially when you have plans to go on a cruise in November). I always have liked Kurt Russell as an actor. In his younger years he seemed to get a lot of retard roles, but lately they have all been pretty serious ones. I guess that has something to do with the fact that he seems to get more serious looking as he ages???

Anyway, I was told that this movie is a remake of an earlier movie Gene Hackman starred in. I suppose I will look it up and rent/buy it if I can find it. I liked the movie enough to do that.

I use to use netficks (earlier post), but had to get rid of it because my wife and I kept forgetting to return the movies. We are considering trying it again, because movie rental on pay-per-view is too easy and we are really racking up the charges.

This time I am determined to remember to mail the movies back.

Maybe if I just threw the TV out the window, we would not have to worry about it anymore at all....

chrysler pacifica

i want a chrysler pacifica. these suckers are nice (check out the video on chryslers website) i like the pacifica not only because of how it looks, but it is all wheel drive and has the autostick feature- in other words my wife can drive it like an automatic but i can shift it like a standard if i want to. this auto is so great that there are forums all over the net dedicated to it. (my favorite one is here) when i was younger i always wanted a nissan 300zx- now that i am old and fixin to die (32) i lean more toward vehicles with some class (this ones got torque and class).

is it just me or is jc pennies going downhill? it use to be a great place to buy cloths, but lately i can't seem to find anything. the service seems to be getting worse as well. it's turned into a "get it yourself" place to shop. it is cheaper than dillards, but dillards waits on you hand and foot. even the lighting is better at dillards- walking into jc pennies is like walking into a cave! and it is not just the one here in hot springs, the one in bossier city is the same way, so i figured if 2 different stores in 2 different states are run the same way, it must be all of them.

jc pennies used to have really good suit coats and pants for cheap- they are still cheap, but they never have my size. or i will finally find a suit coat in my size but there won't be any pants to match.

oh well. just felt like a good gripe

another item on my wishlist- the solatube. i need one for my bedroom in my mobile home. i suppose it would work in a mobile home. i like natural light. my bedroom windows are on the north facing wall and there are trees that block the little light that there is.

all of the bulbs in my house are those natural compact fluorescents. they are more like daylight. incandescent bulbs give off an ugly yellow light, not to mention they are highly inefficient as compared to cf. a 9 watt cf gives off as much light as a 60 watt regular bulb and they last 5-7 years!

if i had the money i would put a solatube in every room and closet in my house. my roof would look like it had the chicken pox with all of those little domes poking out.

i have dimentia. well, maybe. i came across a website about dimentia and the definition for this disease describes me to the letter.

the world has changed drastically in only the past 10 or 15 years. i remember when just having an email address impressed people. now, almost everyone has 2 or 3 or more email addresses. i remember when buying a computer was something you had to put a lot of thought into. now you can grab one for $300 at wal-mart when you go to pick up some toilet paper. high-speed internet was anything above 14.4kbps, and yahoo was some corny austrailian guy.

today, advances in technology have changed even the way we look for companionship. i don't personally know any couples who met this way, or at least if they did they did not tell me. i suspect that soon, this form of dating and match-making will be the norm, unless i am dense and it already is. and why souldn't it be the norm? we do practically everything else over the internet now. why should dating be any different?

in a fast paced society like we live in, it seems almost practical not to waste time trying to find someone the old way. we don't have to leave the house to do our banking anymore, why should we have to leave the house to find the person we want to spend the rest of our lives with?

cable vs dsl

there is a lot of information mixed in with misinformation on the net about which is the better service- cable or dsl high speed internet. when i worked as a high speed data technician for a local cable company, i ran into a lot of "experts" that had their say in the matter- and each one had a different story.

my thoughts are as follows:

"the fact of the matter is that there are too many variables that determine how reliable and fast your service will be to simply say dsl is better than cable, or the other way around."

CNET has what seems to be the most accurate review of both services. (read all about it here)

the thing i hate to hear more than anything is "cable is faster than dsl" or "dsl is faster than cable". that is such a vague statement, and the people who make it probably don't even know what speed they signed up for. when i would show up to have a look at someones service, sometimes i would ask what speed they signed up for. 9 times out of 10 the answer was "the $19 one", or "the $34" one.

if you sign up for 1Mbps down 256Kbps up, it does not matter whether you have cable or dsl- your speed should be close to what you signed up for under normal circumstances. if you signed up for a 1Mbps service and your speed tests are only showing 300Kbps, that does not mean that dsl is faster than cable- it means that for whatever reason, bad modem, bad cable run or something wrong between you and the cable companies head-end, you cannot get the performance you signed up for. the same goes with the dsl providers.

i have had cable and i have had dsl. both services have always given me the speed i signed up for. i currently have cable- dsl is not available in my area. my last cable company had an internet only service, which i thought was great because i like satellite tv better than cable tv (i got free cable internet and cable tv because i worked for the cable company- i still had dish network though).

where i am now i would prefer to have dsl because the cable company here does not offer an internet only service- you have to have cable tv too. but since dsl is not available here, i had to go with the cable company and forget about satellite tv (gotta have my broadband).

on the other hand, if i signed up for dsl here i would have to get their phone service too, and i use vonage and have no use for their phone service. so either way, i am not really getting what i want. if the cable company had an internet only service, i would have that and dish network. if dsl was available in my area and had an internet only setup, i would go with that. if they both were available and both offered and internet only service, i would go with the one that was the cheapest!

before i tell you the story about our never-ending endeavor to book and actually go on a cruise, let me tell you that priceline is the best place to find the best deals on cruises i think. i titled this post cheep tickets because our never-ending endeavor to book and actually go on a cruise was too long.

my wife and i have been trying to go on a cruise since we got married.

initially, we were going to go on a cruise for our honeymoon. we planned it all out, and eventually had to scratch the idea because we simply couldn't afford it at the time. it was very disappointing, but our honeymoon in eureka springs, arkansas was still very memoriable.

so 3 years later, we finally booked our caribbean cruise scheduled for november of last year. it was going to leave out of new orleans. we couldn't wait to go. it was the almost all we talked about for months.

well, we all know what happened to new orleans at the end of august of 2005- katrina wiped out new orleans 2 measely months before our cruise was scheduled for. don't get me wrong, the devistation caused by katrina far outweighs the importance of our cruise- but it was still very disappointing.

so we get an email from carnival, stating that the cruise ship will leave from galveston, texas instead, and that it was our option to cancel and get our money back or get on in galveston at a slightly later date. of course we wanted to go on this cruise, so we decided to go at the later date and leave out of galveston. we even made plans to stop in houston, tx overnight to stay at my wifes grandfathers house, and leave the next morning to get on the ship.

so all was fine and dandy, and then we get another email from carnival. it said that the cruise ship that was going to leave from galveston is now being used to house hurricane victims, and the cruise had been canceled. wouldn't you know it?

so, we have been invited to go on another cruise with some friends this november (2006). man i hope it works out this time.

visco elastic mattress

i paid $1600 for my sealy visco foam mattress. i paid that much because i thought that that was the price of a decent nights sleep and fewer back problems. after i got the mattress, i stumbled upon a website www.wholesale-memory-foam.com. they sell custom memory foam mattresses for about $1,000 less than a comparable name brand mattress, and you get to pick the foams density and thickness according to your weight and how firm you want the mattress to be. Sure, it doesn't have the fancy pillow-top cushion, but for a grand less i would have gladly made the sacrifice. actually, the sealy mattress we got was the cheapest of the queen size we needed in a visco foam mattress.

when i bought the sealy, i did not know a thing about memory foam. i thought it was all the same and that they were just expensive. i wish i knew then what i know now- not only would i have saved $1000, but i would have gotten a mattress that gave a little more. the mattress we got is a higher density mattress than what my wife and i needed, and even though it is the most comfortable mattress we have ever owned, it is still a bit too firm. the dealer doesn't tell you anything about mattress density. it felt fine at the store, but you can't really tell how a mattress is going to work out until you have slept on it all night. but at least with the custom foam mattresses you can better your odds of picking one you will be happy with.

vonage voip

i have had vonage for about 3 years now. i love vonage. the bill is never more than $30 with all the features and long distance i can handle, including an extra "virtual" phone number.

all i remember about bellsouth, the telephone company i used to have my phone service through, was being mad every time i got the bill. it was always wrong, filled with calls i didn't make and charges for stuff i did not sign up for. it was a given that i was going to have to make a call to bellsouth and gripe for 30 minutes or so everytime i got my bill in the mail.

the only problem i have ever had was when my cable internet was giving me problems. but that was the cable, not vonage's fault.

with vonage, i can call anywhere in the us and canada, and international calls are dirt cheap. yes you have to pay for broadband service too, but i already have it anyway. even if i did not, knowing what i know now, i would pay for broadband to get voip. more features and no 10 page statements full of calls you didn't make and things you didn't sign up for.

so i have been completely free from ma bell for 3 years now, and i don't see ever going back unless for some reason i had to, or if they added all of the features of vonage (including online access to your account so you could see your phone calls & messages and make instant changes to your account) and got cheap and quit botching up peoples phone bills. even if they did all of these things, i probably still would not go back. long live vonage.

acne medication

when i looked in the mirror this morning, i saw a very small pimple starting to form on my cheek. it doesn't bother me when i see a zit these days, because they are few and far between and usually go away within a day or two anyway.

but as a youth, i had the terriable misfortune of being afflicted with what i consider to be severe acne. my memories of high school are riddled with my struggle to control the acne. i had no success what-so-ever. nothing i tried had any positive effects (plenty of adverse ones though), and being from a poor family i was not able to just get up and go to the dermatologist. there were some periods where the breakouts were not as bad as others, but for the most part it was pretty bad all the time.

i was well into my last year in high school, when it finally cleared up. why couldn't i have been stricken with the stuff after high school?

anyway, in my search for a topical acne medication that worked, i found nothing. everything over-the-counter just seemed to irritate the area and make it worse. i don't have to deal with the problem anymore, but i still wonder if there is anything out there that could have made my teenage years a little more memoriable.

there is so much information out there- so many different treatments, medications, regimans, etc. does any of this stuff work? for less than severe acne, otc topicals probably work fine. but i think severe cases have to be treated individually by a dermatologist. i think anyone with severe acne should see a dermitologist and forget about the otc stuff.

i have always had the old timie dumbells like you get at champs or any sporting goods store. you know, 2 big hunks of iron with a handle in the middle? Well, the next thing on my wishlist are these bad-boys here. the bowflex selecttech dumbells.

I don't even need the stand- it would be nice though. these things are $300 without the stand. but they look so easy to work with. instead of having 3 or 4 sets of different size dumbells, you just take off or put on the plates. they have a dial that you turn to select how much weight you need an it drops off the extra plates! how great is that?

even if i lived in the north pole, i could not bring myself to wear anything as ugly as mukluks. is this a growing trend or have these things always been popular? i suppose in very cold places they are an essiential item. and i suppose essiential items are kind of.. essiential. so it only stands to reason that they would have to become fashionable in the areas where they are essiential.

but i think i would just have to get frost bite wearing my new balance, because i would not be caught dead in a pair of those things. Not that i am some fashion king or anything, cause i have been known to wear the same ol t-shirt for a week. but i know ugly, and mukluks are ugly.

but to each his own, i always say.

seriously though, i don't know if there is any truth to the claims that people using zicam can lose their smelling ability, or if it is just one of those things lawyers like to jump on so they can rake in the cash with class-action suits.

i think i will just use nyquil from now on anyway, just in case there is some truth to it. i don't really like how that gel feels going into my nose anyway. maybe one day someone will come up with that shot that will eliminate the common cold. not that i get colds that terriably often- actually i suffer from allergies more than anything. i suffer from the 24/7/360 sneezy headachy scratchy-eyed allergy. if they come up with a shot for that i will be first in line.

i wish i could come up with something as stupid-simple as the tablemate. somebody is sitting back making piles of money from a revised version of someone else's idea. it's not like the flowbee, which was actually an original product. the tablemate is just a better designed tv tray!

what a world we live in. if you can find a way to market it, you can sell anything. since i was a kid i have always wanted to create something big. i don't mean a large item, i mean something significantly useful to mankind. but i am afraid that i am no more than an idealist. i don't think it is normally the idealist who makes the dough. it is usually the person or company that can market the idea that makes the money.

this is not always the case of course. after all, the flowbee guy marketed his own invention. yeah, it took a lot of work and a lot of his own money, but he did it. and i am sure he is doing pretty good for himself. the flowbee has been around for like 20 years! hard to believe- it seems like just yesterday i was sitting in front of the television back home watching the infomercial in my jammies.

the tablemate is not really on my wishlist, i just thought the idea was neat

my wife, my daughter and i went and saw "walk the line" the other day, the movie about johnny cash. we had to leave before it was actually over, because my daughter of 2.5 years was having a very bad day. what we did get to see between beatings was very interesting though. before i saw this movie i knew nothing about him at all. i would not have been able to tell you even the name of one of his songs. but the movie was really good actually, and my wife even ran out and bought a johnny cash cd a couple of days after we saw it.

i thought joaquin phoenix did some great acting. i heard he actually did his own singing, and that it wasn't dubbed- ?? anyway, great actor i think.

i went to the johnny cash website www.johnnycash.com and in the background a familiar song played- "rusty cage". i did not know that soundgarden did not originally write that song. i always liked the song, and now that i know johnny cash originally wrote it i like it even more.

when i was in school i thought that the flowbee was the lamest thing i had ever seen. i would never have let somebody use that thing on my hair. now that i am older and wiser (and have to pay for my own haircuts), i see the practical side of such a device.

ab lounger

i want to be an ab lounger- someone who lounges around and watches as his abs turns to flab. when i worked for the cable company and as a satellite tv contractor, i didn't have to think about my abs. i did so much running around climbing poles and crawling under houses that my stomach stayed flat. now that i am a work at home dad, the most exercise i get is when i take my daughter outside to play. i usually just ride around on my heelys for a while while she plays in the sandbox or rides her tricycle. not much exercise, really.

i have actually thought about getting an ab lounge. but i keep hearing that "pilates" is the thing to do these days. maybe i will just get big and fat. then i won't have to worry about whether or not i should get an ab lounge or do pilates.

i got a pair of heelys about a month ago. i love these shoes. i haven't worn my new balance shoes since i got these things. everywhere i go, instead of walking, i heel. there is a bit of a learning curve with these things. it is harder than skating on normal skates. when i first got them, i was trying to tell my wife how to do it (i got her a pair too). in mid sentence, my feet came out from under me and i landed on my back in a pile of leaves.

i was heeling around one day when i messed up and ended up doing some kind of fonky split. a bunch of neighborhood kids saw me do this.... very embarrassing. i am getting better though. i have learned how to "ollie" over stuff. i wish i could find someone in my area to heely with. no one i know seems to be too interested in the idea.

i got mine from www.zappos.com if you want a pair i highly recommend zappos- if they don't fit or you just don't like them they pay to have them shipped back and refund your money. the site is really easy to navigate too.

my wife and i had netflicks for about a year. it cost us about 20 smackers a month, which comes out to about $240 a year. i think we watched about 8 movies from netflicks. that comes out to approximatley $30 a movie. what a deal!

of course, we are partly to blame. neither of us can ever remember to mail the stupid things back. we are the kind of individuals that need to stick with good ol' reliable pay-per-view. netflicks is for responsible people. pay-per-view is for absent minded people.

there is one service that we used for a while, called cleanfilms. great service for responsible people. the movies are professionally edited for unsuitable content- you can't even tell though. if you want to sit down with the kids and watch hellraiser, go ahead! just kidding, i doubt they have hellraiser. but it really is a great service for those who do not care to soak in filth and disturbing images. check it out at www.cleanfilms.com

man i am so glad i don't have hemroids. i used to work with a guy who had it bad. he could hardly walk. he was telling me about a friend of his who had it so bad, he had to be rushed to the hospital before he bled to death. blech!

when i was in high school, i was hanging out in a friend of mines living room with a bunch of fools. it was unusually quiet for a while, until one of my friends raises his hand a blurts out of nowhere "who in here besides me has hemmoroids?" i was floored. i was even more suprised when another friend of mine speaks up and says "i ain't gonna lie dude, i got em bad!". then they started relating their hemmoroidal experiences like it was some kind of AA meeting or something!

i called curcuit city today to ask if they had a particular plasma tv in stock. the guy went on to explain all of the specific details about the television, as if i had asked him anything other than "do you have one in stock?" it would not have bothered me so much if it didn't sound like he was being condescending.

best buy is the same way. they think just because you don't work there you can't possibly know anything about electronics.

i used to install satellite tv systems sold by both of these stores. circutcity was better than best buy, but they both did anything they could to get a sale. before local channels were available via' satellite tv in the area i used to live in, they wouldn't explain to the customer that local channel's were not available. i would get to the customers house, finnish the installation, and show the customer how to operate the system. imagine my surprise when the customer would say "this is great stuff! what channel are the locals on?"

then i started getting to customers houses and they had sold them a rinky-dink antenna that i was supposed to install for next to nothing. i would install these sorry pieces of junk and the customer would always want me to take it down so they could return it! the picture was so crappy, i would have wanted to return it too! but guess what, i wasn't getting paid to take the antenna down. i would have to call the store and tell them that the customer wanted to return the antenna because it didn't work. they would always say the same stupid thing- "did you install it right?" There is only one way to install these things- you mount them on the dish.

they stopped selling the things when they realized they were all getting returned. then locals came to town and everything was great. i still can't believe those guys. and the call to the store today just made me realize that it hasn't changed since i left- 3 years ago.
